Hydrothermal Carbonization

HTC as a biomass
processing method

HTC is a method of processing biomass (organic waste such as plant residues, agricultural by-products, and even sewage sludge) in a way that mimics natural geological processes which transform organic matter into coal.

HTC

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANTAGES

Processes all types of organic waste

regardless of moisture content – all can be treated using HTC technology.

The resulting bio-coal is CO₂-neutral,

can be safely stored, and offers a calorific value of up to 23 MJ.

Two-thirds of the biomass energy is retained

in the carbonized product, which can be converted into synthesis gas. This syngas can then be used to generate energy in a gas engine or for hydrogen production.

The process liquid (effluent)

can be utilized as a mineral fertilizer or fed into a biogas plant.

Ensures complete hygienization

by irreversibly destroying pathogens, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, and microplastics in the waste material.

Unlike fermentation,

HTC is a physico-chemical process, not a biological one – it can be paused and restarted at any time without loss.

A universal solution

enabling decentralized generation of electricity and heating/cooling energy.

Compact and space-efficient,

the installation is simple to build and requires minimal footprint.

Process Stages

Organic waste such as biomass, plant residues, or sewage sludge is collected and prepared for processing.

The material is placed in a specialized reactor, where it is exposed to water at temperatures ranging from 180 to 250°C and pressures between 20 and 30 bar. The process typically lasts several hours, depending on the type of feedstock.

During the process, water acts as a reactive medium, dissolving some organic compounds and triggering reactions that result in the formation of biochar.

Final products such as biochar and nutrient-rich process water (effluent) are separated and can be further processed or utilized for various purposes.

BENEFITS

Applications of HTC Products

01.Energy Production

Biochar, a fuel with high energy value, can be combusted or used as a feedstock for the production of synthesis gas, which can ultimately be used to separate green hydrogen.

02. Agriculture

Biochar can be applied to soil, improving its structure, water retention, and ability to store nutrients.

03. Wastewater Treatment

HTC by-products can be used in water purification processes due to their capacity to absorb pollutants.

04. Chemical Industry

The nutrient-rich water produced during the HTC process can be used in the production of organic fertilizers.
